Smell first, then the machine

Dehumidifier for Mildew Smell

A dehumidifier helps with a mildew smell in one specific way: it keeps the air dry enough that mold and mildew stop getting the moisture they need. It does not remove growth that is already there. The EPA's order is to fix the water source, dry and clean what is moldy, then keep humidity below 60 percent, ideally 30 to 50. If you haven't found the source yet, start with where a musty smell comes from.

What matters

Four things to look for when the problem is a smell

  1. It drains without you. When a bucket fills, a dehumidifier stops, and the humidity climbs back while nobody notices. A built-in pump or a continuous drain hose keeps it working in a room you don't visit daily.
  2. It holds a humidity setting. You want a unit you can set to a target, around 50 percent, and leave. Running flat out all the time costs electricity; switching off too early lets the smell come back.
  3. It is sized for the space. Capacity ratings changed in 2019, so compare numbers with the rating change in mind.
  4. It restarts after a power cut. A unit that stays off after an outage is off until someone notices the smell again.

Measure before and after with a separate hygrometer; it tells you whether the room actually reached the target, which a smell can't.

Picks

Three dehumidifiers for a musty room

hOmeLabs 50-pint dehumidifier with built-in condensate pump, white

hOmeLabs HME021006N 50-pint dehumidifier with built-in pump

  • Capacity: 50 pints/day, rated for up to 4,000 sq ft
  • Built-in condensate pump + drain hose: continuous drainage without emptying a bucket
  • The Amazon listing says ENERGY STAR; we could not find the model in the ENERGY STAR database, so treat it as the listing's claim

For a large damp space such as a basement, where the smell keeps coming back because nobody empties a bucket. The pump is the feature that matters most here. Honest caveat: this exact model isn't in the manufacturer's current lineup of Wi-Fi-enabled units, though it's still sold as new by several independent retailers; check the listing before buying.

Midea Cube 20-pint dehumidifier, compact cube-shaped unit, white

Midea Cube 20-pint dehumidifier for a smaller room

  • Capacity: 20 pints/day, rated for up to 1,500 sq ft
  • Set mode runs until the humidity you set is reached (Midea's manual)
  • Bucketless mode drains continuously through a hose; restarts with its previous setting after a power cut (Midea's manual)

For a smaller room that smells musty: a spare bedroom, a closet area, a laundry corner. Holding a setting and draining on its own, the two features that matter for a smell, are confirmed in the manufacturer's own manual. We could not confirm a noise figure from the manufacturer, so none is stated here.

Vremi 35-pint dehumidifier, white, ENERGY STAR rated

Vremi 35-pint dehumidifier, manual drain

  • Capacity: 35 pints/day (as listed; see the sizing page on rating year)
  • Manual bucket, no built-in pump: empty by hand or run a gravity drain hose yourself

The simpler option, for a space you're in often enough to empty a bucket or where a floor drain makes a gravity hose easy. If the smell is in a room you rarely enter, one of the two units above suits the job better. We could not verify noise level or room coverage from a source we could read.

When the dehumidifier smells

Why a dehumidifier can smell like mildew

Water sitting in a bucket and a dusty filter are the usual reasons. Midea's manual for the Cube is direct about both: clean the bucket every few weeks to prevent the growth of mold, mildew and bacteria, using water and a mild detergent, and wash the air filter with clean water about every two weeks. Other makers give their own intervals, so check the manual for your model. Draining continuously through a hose also means no water stands in the bucket at all. How to clean a dehumidifier has the full routine.

If the unit is clean and the room still smells, the source is in the room, not the machine: go back to finding the source and keeping it from coming back.
