Air Purifier vs Dehumidifier: Which Do You Need?
They solve different problems. A dehumidifier pulls water out of the air and lowers the humidity. An air purifier pushes air through a filter and catches particles such as dust, pollen and pet dander, and, with an activated carbon stage, some odors and gases. An air purifier does not lower humidity, so if the problem is dampness, condensation or a musty smell, it is a dehumidifier problem first.
What each one does
| Dehumidifier | Air purifier | |
|---|---|---|
| Lowers humidity | Yes, that is its job | No |
| Dust, pollen, pet dander | No | Yes, with a particle filter |
| Odors and gases | Indirectly, by drying out what causes damp smells | Only with an activated carbon or similar gas filter |
| Mold and musty smell | Removes the moisture mold needs; does not remove mold already there | Does not address the cause, per EPA |
| How you know it's working | A hygrometer reading drops toward 30 to 50% | Less dust and fewer allergy symptoms; no humidity change |
Why an air purifier won't fix a damp room
EPA's guide to air cleaners answers this directly: portable air cleaners and furnace filters do not address the cause of mold and musty odors. The cause is moisture, and EPA's mold guidance is to fix the water source, clean up the growth, and keep indoor humidity below 60 percent, ideally 30 to 50, using dehumidifiers or air conditioners when needed. A purifier in a damp basement filters the air while growth on the damp surfaces carries on.
If the smell is what brought you here, start with finding where a musty smell comes from, then what matters in a dehumidifier for that job.
Which one, by problem
- Condensation on windows, damp walls, a musty smell, readings above 60%: a dehumidifier. Size it with ENERGY STAR's chart.
- Dust, pollen, pet hair and dander in a room that isn't damp: an air purifier.
- Both: a damp basement where someone also has allergies. Fix the moisture with a dehumidifier and use a purifier for particles. EPA's guide also makes the point that no air cleaner removes every pollutant, and that filtration works alongside ventilation and dealing with the source, not instead of them.
- Not sure: measure first. If the humidity reading is normal, a dehumidifier has nothing to do.
